I think this gets it right.  Sun is in the Intel market now in
anticipation of Merced/IA-64.  All the current work is just to get their
foot in the door for the real game, which starts when Intel 64-bit can
pose a serious threat to the cost viability of the latest SPARC. I think
Scott McNealy said of the latest SPARC chips that Sun wasn't sure if they
would ever turn a profit on the chip part of the business.

The most substantial shortcoming I have noted in Solaris x86 is lack of
SMP support, and this would be a key consideration in determining the
viability of Solaris for Intel as a firewall platform for certain kinds
of operations in certain kinds of environments (yes, that's a lot of
qualifications).  If you are considering porting a firewall to Solaris
x86, you would probably want to look at your CPU requirements on SPARC and
take it from there...
