I agree with the legitimacy of publications statement. We all know how the
media
is. However, when you ask about the length of time C&W has been monitoring
firewalls, you need to consider that this activity as a well defined service
offering really hasn't been around that long, so for Cable and Wireless to
have been
offering it for 3 years seems about right. It doesn't mean they're
necessarily good at it, however. I can't talk to the C&W story, but while
recently reviewing a business abstract for another large (telco) security
service provider, I was shocked to find a statement that reflected their
intentions to lump firewall and VPN management into general network
monitoring.

I see the fundamental problem being that larger providers without a core
focus on the business view it as "just another managed network device."
Where's the value in that? If I wanted to know it was up, I'd simply ping
it.
Bottom line is that noone has clearly defined what managed security even is,
let alone managed security responsibilities, other than in SLAs.
