They aren't mutually exclusive technologies.  FWTK protects at the 
application layer, IPF protects at the transport and Internetwork layer.

Why not use both?

I'd probably run something other than Sendmail, or at least a secure mail 
relay on the FW, postfix or qmail would be my choices.
