Greetings,
I know this message is off-topic but I can't think of anywhere
else to ask for recommendations.
Last week, I was defragmenting the IBM TravelStar 14 GIG 2.5"
Notebook HDD on the IBM ThinkPad 770Z 9549-8AU notebook using Norton
Utilities Speedisk 2000 when it was 98% done, the machine just froze so I
turned it off. Upon turning it back on, I get a error code 174 which
means that something didn't past POST so I went into the diagnostics and
the only thing that failed is the HDD since it says Dev 017 Error Code 01
FRU 6010 which means either the HDD or System Board is dead. So I did the
advanced diagnostics and it seems like the controller on the HDD fails.
So I took the HDD and connected it to a 2.5" to desktop adapter and it
says Primary HDD failure.
Apparently, the local IBM Service Center for my IBM ThinkPad
notebook sent the 2.5" 14 gig IBM TravelStar drive to PRC (Peripheral
Repair Corp) in Chatsworth, CA (www.prcdiskdrives.com) for repair and data
recovery since they can charge it under the warranty. What happened is
they said it was a headcrash and that the data is not recoverable and
needs to be sent to Ontrack in Southern California with my permission
since they said Ontrack uses a laser technique to recover the data. Some
other people told me that PRC doesn't have a clean room or the equipment.
I requested the drive back and now need to send it to send it to someone
else who can get the job done at a price that a student can afford.
Anyone have any recommendations of Data Recovery Companies that will do
the job without the costs of Ontrack? Thanks!
Cheers,
