Vincent, First off, if it was something that was hit with the head onto the platter most likely the data is gone. It all depends on where the head slapped the media. I spent 5 years at WD in tech support. So I have a far amount of knowledge on this. Let me back up a little, first off it all depends on where the head hit the media. If it was in the middle of the drive, then only the data under that section will be lost. You should be able to get most of it back. If it was on track 0 or 1 then you are going to be real hard press to get much of it back. Well without spending more then the thinkpad is worth. Data recovery is very expensive, if the drive was opened in a non clean room that will even bring up more problems. There is a company in San Fran area called www.drviesavers.com that might be able to do it. But it is going to be as expensive as Ontrack. You can send the drive to drive savers and they will do an estimate on it for free. So that will give you a ball park of the cost. Good Luck. *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 5/7/2000 at 10:11 PM Vincent Poy wrote: >Greetings, > > I know this message is off-topic but I can't think of anywhere >else to ask for recommendations. > > Last week, I was defragmenting the IBM TravelStar 14 GIG 2.5" >Notebook HDD on the IBM ThinkPad 770Z 9549-8AU notebook using Norton >Utilities Speedisk 2000 when it was 98% done, the machine just froze so I >turned it off.
