NetBEUI can't be routed, so it shouldn't make it past whatever machine
you're using to route traffic between the internal network and the Internet.
NetBIOS is another story; it can be run over some routable protocols.
If the system to be connected to the cable modem (your "router") is a
Windows machine, you should disable NetBIOS on the external NIC. On NT 4 you
do this by unbinding the WINS Client from the NIC in the network control
panel applet. On Win2K, right-click Local Area Connection, choose
properties, then scroll down to TCP/IP and again choose Properties; then
click the Advanced tab, where you'll see an option to Disable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
Of course there's more you should do to lock a Windows machine down, but for
that you should probably get a book on NT security. "Hacking Exposed"
doesn't suck, and covers much more than NT.
But Linux with IPChains just might be a better idea ...

Subject: Home Network Security
Hello,
What do you all recommend for a good home security firewall?
I have hear of Black Ice and Zonealarm.
I am hooking up 3 PCs to a cable modem connection in a home for a
friend.
What issues should I be aware concerning security.
How would I block netbeui from being broadcast out through the cable
modem.
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank You
