One way would be to send ICMP Mask (type 17) requests, assuming the remote 
TCP/IP implementation allows/supports this and it's not firewalled out 
anywhere, however a firewall was not listed as a criteria to your question, 
Hafida :)

Might not allways be practical, however in theory it should work :)
