Dirk,

I think the term you are looking for is "firewall appliance". Since you mentioned our
product, the Cisco PIX firewall let me tell you a little more about the PIX to help
make your decision.

First off, I think our product comes with some good credentials. We at Cisco have
been selling the PIX for five years and there are more than 50,000 of them out there.

The PIX uses the "Adaptive Security Algorithm" to provide stateful firewall services
to TCP/IP networks. That means that the PIX can provide filter packets based on the
state of a connection between two hosts ("Stateful Inspection" is actually a term used
by another firewall vendor) . The PIX has the ability to inspect traffic from hosts
using a variety of applications through the use of application specific filters or
proxies (there is a list of 40 odd protocols and applications that are supported). So
the PIX is much more than a "packet filter".

At Cisco we are also very proud about the level of our technical support that we
provide our customers. If you have a problem you can contact Cisco 24 hours a day,
seven days per week, 365 days per year from any country on the planet and receive
technical support. We also support a wide variety of languages (other than
Californian English). If you don't want to call you can work with our TAC via e-mail.
We also provide a variety of self support tools via our web site.

Regards,

Brian
