I just returned from the firewalls course last week. It was excellent. In
two weeks I go to security essentials course and can let you know about that
when I return. From reading the course details online, I don't expect to
learn much beyond what I've picked up on my own over the years. On the
other hand, I didn't think to get too much from the firewalls course and it
turned out to be some of the best training I've ever had. On a general
level, there isn't a lot covered in the one course I've had that I hadn't
already picked up from reading "Building Internet Firewalls" or this list
and FW-WIZ. The real benefit comes from the details you get that weren't
necessarily obvious from reading, but which can be pointed out in class.
Overall, I highly recommend the training. I can't speak for the
certification part yet, as I have yet to get the details of my exam. The
other benefit I found was just getting to meet some of the people I knew
from online (Chris Brenton and Stephen Northcutt, for example). Getting to
talk to these people that have already been through a lot of what we newbies
are dealing with makes ramping up skillwise a lot easier.

Subject: GIAC Courses
Hi all,
Has anyone completed any of the GIAC courses. I am considering doing them to
obtain certification in the security field, but I want to know if its worth
while. The price is pretty steep and I have to travel to get to the
destination as well. The first one that I would attend would either be the
"Security Essentials" or Auditing Networks.
Thanks
Mark
