Zachary,

If a company want to be secure then they have to pay the price...

Having a FW is only the first thing of the costs and building a
secure network...
What about training for your IT personel ?
Licenses ? 24 hours support ? Hardware ?

Security is something that cost $$$ even if you go for open-source
products (will reduce the costs though).

In my opinion companies do sometimes weigh the costs for
security compared to being compromised.
Most of the times security will only cost you and you don't
earn a lot with it only if it is your core business providing
security facilities for other companies. That's why some
companies don't take security that serious.

And that is wrong

But they will feel it when they are really compromised.
And the strangest thing is then that the company has
anough $$$ to pump up their security because a compromise
will cost you $$$ due to a "bad name" of your company

A router is a device you can't compare with a firewall.
Routers can be expensive too in their own way and their own
line of business

A PIX is something different then a normal 2600 router.
A router can greatly add security by using access lists, but are
limited in security when it comes to a real firewall (not talking
about a statefull or application layer one).

Maybe something confusing for you all but I wanted to say
something I guess...
