so don't distinct between hardware and software. let's distinct
between a host-based firewall and a blackbox based firewall.
the first has more configuration features. the second one has
the killer feature, that no non-needed (maybe hostile) processes
may be started on the box. this grants sanity for gateways even
for nasty admins 8-)
