Postfix is a 99.8% replacement for sendmail. The remaining 0.2% are incompatibilities 
that only
occur when local services are overly using sendmail-specific stuff.

Indeed postix comes with a compatibility-program that catches local executing calls of 
the
sendmail daemon and transforms them into valid postix commands.  This is why you 
sometimes
still see command lines like "/usr/lib/sendmail -bs -q 1m" around in a posfix system - 
it's the
compatibility crutch that's being called. Think of it as an early sendmail-"API"   ;-)
Same with an EXIM installation (yet another mail daemon).
