I suppose someone will use the technique to do something even uglier and more VLANish sooner or later. Unfortunately Ugly Hacks[tm] tend to be what saves your bacon during Critical Events[tm] with No Budget [trademark application rejected due to prior art]-- In the "It's almost the weekend and it's funny" category- I once heard of a network where someone had given every machine a different and totally random IP address, then added a route for each host to every other host.
