that's exactly what i tried with:

  echo -ne '\007\033k'$_'\033\\\033]0;'

but it does't work. something with the quoting goes wrong here because i
get 033]0; printed in the terminal.

but it works like this:
  echo -n \007\033k$_\033\\\033]\;
which is similar to what you suggest:

>    echo -ne \7\033 blah blah screen title\033\e]2\; blah blah xterm title

i am still confused about how the quoting works with regards to \\
