hi:
i have a file that lists filenames that are to be renamed:
oldname:dir name:newname

at least the dirname contains spaces.

now i am trying to do the equivalent of:
awk -F: '{ print $1, $2, $3 }' filenames | while read old dir new;
  do mv "$old" "$dir/$new"; done

this works with bash if i escape the spaces with \:
oldname:dir\ name:newname

however no matter what i try, i can not get read in fish to group the
values as intended.

is this a problem with read or
does anyone have any clues as how to solve this?

greetings, martin.
