I have a friend that is a chemist she tells me that Tee tree oil is a natural deterrent for bugs. I put it in all my horse sprays ( coat conditioner, fly spray ) I will check with her to see what she has to say regarding ticks. If you have some around, give it a try, I have not had any big problems with them yet. Maybe it's luck or maybe it's the Tea Tree oil I don't know for sure.
