We are preparing with the help of Susie Sadlon, articles on getting ready for the BE show - or any show for that matter - Susie's is a great article written from the perspective of a first timer - although she and her husband Mike are certainly not first timers anymore. One of the neat things about Blue Earth is how it brings people together - no matter where you are with your talents on a horse - or where you are logistically - one of the best examples I can give are the folks I call, the Super Six - they have somewhat adopted me as the odd 7th because my husband cannot attend my riding events as he is the person who stays at home to milk the cows to pay for the horses! God love him. (and please continue to drink milk). The Super-Six comprises Rich and Nancy Hotovy, Tom and Ann Hans and Mike and Susie Sadlon. Three different states, (actually four different states now) six different backgrounds - but a great - friendship that has gone on for more years than I know about.They meet through out the year to trail ride and I believe they've attended the Progress Days with Rich - and so forth. One of the reasons the Blue Earth show is such a success as it is - IS because of the SS (Super Six) - they are stuck like glue to each other and ALL have done their share of hot sweaty work in the ring - long hours in the barn - first ones there, last to leave work ethics that kept this show afloat. (They are such good friends, like our horses - when they are seperated they paw). THIS probably is what I call the absolute greatness of the Blue Earth Show. We are all so far apart with our Fjords - and there are so few places to gather together with them - that when we do get together its a combination of coming home and Christmas morning - feeling. I missed the show one year, and when I returned It was like coming home. Maybe its the water in Minnesota - maybe we're all drugged or something. But in all of my years showing ( I've been to Congress, the Stock Shows, Washington, Harrisburg..etc)......really for some unknown reason the Blue Earth show, at least to me is the ONLY place to be in July. I could go on and on - but I have to say one more thing before you all get bored with this long message. I just heard that Nancy Hotovy had to put her great old stallion Toby down - many of you have offspring of his around the country and you all know what a wonderful horse he was. Early this spring Tom and Ann Hans lost Haakon, - Two of the top producing stallions in the midwest are gone. Stallions that have proven their right to be breeding stock and have contributed to the gene pool of the great American bred Fjords. At one point I never thought I'd be involved with the Fjord breed to see such wonderful horse come and go. But its becasue of the people (like the SS) that has kept me in the breed that I cherish, and the people who make it so. Pat Holland NW Illinois
