While the subject is on feeding fjords, does anyone on this list use
compacted bales of hay-mostly timothy is what I get-that is shipped from
Canada by the tractor trailer load to feed stores?  I've been using it
for a couple of years but have been wondering how it's harvested.  I've
been told the hay is dried in huge dryers and then baled with 4 plastic
strips holding about 70 pounds of hay together & being about 1/2 the size
of a normal bale of hay.  It is expensive-$10+ a bale but it takes up
less storage room and 12 bales lasts me about a month & I'm feeding 2
horses & 2 minis. ( My ancient pony can't chew hay & our warmblood is
boarded near my daughter's college.)  Before I was feeding 1 to 2 bales
of regular baled hay daily depending on the season & temperatures.
Someone (my vet?) mentioned they thought the compacted hay was sprayed
with something to give it a nice green appearance.  Some compacted
bales-especially those with some clover or alfalfa mixed in-seem to
be dusty or moldy so that goes back to the feed store to be exchanged for
better bales.  I gave up on our local hay because it's either too dry or
too wet to get a good cuttings.  I'm interested in knowing more about
this hay-the horses love it.  Loki practically inhales it.  I should have
it analyzed but I was just curious if anyone else uses it....my feed
store doesn't have the answers to my questions-they just gladly take my
Visa card.  Sandra in Va.
