By the way where does one buy Uzo? And oh yes only virgin for me.
Although I haven't bought or drunk (drank?) any in ages, I believe
Uzo is still available at a full stock package store.
Also, on the subject of foaling, I'm not sure I see as a good
thing keeping a mare, especially a maiden mare, isolated from her
herd mates in a stall. I think having a walk-in stall with a small
outside paddock in sight of the rest of the herd, or allowing
birth to occur in a natural setting would be a lot less stressful. We
have done it both ways (e.g, allowed births to occur in clean
pastures or brought a mare inside if weather was bad), and think the
more natural approach is best.
No fear, other mares know to stay away from the one who is acting
(and probably smelling) different. Even the stallions (perhaps
especially the stalions) more than keep their distance. In fact, they
tend to show a "patrolling" behavior along the edge of the pasture or
paddock closest to other horse, people, dogs, etc.
On the other hand, having that young one brought to earth as a herd
member, begins their socialization right away. We have never seen a
mare fail to protect her vulnerable new born, by chasing away other
herd mates who get just a little too close, and by positioning
herself between the foal and others
