This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Brigid,
I think the concern with longing is they would be stressed on too small a circle....if you kept them on a large circle and controlled , the longing would be good. What about ground driving and long lining? Since they have been driven, this might be a good way to get them back to work and for you to get comfortable with them. I also like "double lunging"...using two lines, almost like long lining, but with the inside line direct to the bit, the outside either around the rump (for more control ) held up by a stirrup (if saddle) or shaft loop (if harness) or you can bring the outside line up over the saddle. but the outside rein around the rump of the horse really allows you to control the horse... he can't swing that rump away and you have leverage on the outside rein. Sart slow, and don't let them get "wild" on the lunge line, insist on their attention and this will give them exercise as well as training and you will get to know them. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska. Still messy break-up, but even warmer today..48 and sunny. All that snow and ice may be gone soon! > Why should I be careful with longing?
