No question that lunging is boring for the lunger and lungee!! But a necessary
"evil" for all the reasons stated in the previous posts.  I find lunging 
especially
useful as a gauge of the animal's attitude on any given day. (Some of them do 
get
up on the wrong side of the stall from time to time!) Varying the routine with
trotting poles and cavelletti laid out in different patterns each time helps to
keep it a little more interesting for them and me.
