Hi:
In the West, this gait is usually called a singlefoot. But its the same as
rack, (but the rack is done at speed with high leg action), stepping-pace,
amble, tropota (in Russia), rahvan (in Turkey), and several other labels. It
seems to be a gene, and not a trained thing. Other breeds do not have it at
all, such as the Friesian, which was known as a "harddraver" in Europe
(hard-trotter). I find it interesting that breeds originating along that
edge of Europe often have it, while others, like the Barb do not. Also the
Arabian does not typically have this gait, nor does the Thoroughbred and
many others. Akhal-Teke on the other hand has this gait, along with the
Mongolian and several Chinese breeds.

Wherever it came from, its nice to have!
