Another method that doesn't require as much math that I've heard of is that
the horse shouldn't carry more than 20% - 25% of their body weight.  So, if
your horse weights 1100 lbs and you use 23% for total rider & tack weight
that comes to 253 lbs. It also depends on the horse, hard-boned arabs can
carry more and our short, but stocky Fjords can carry more weight on the
higher end too. Of course, it also depends on the conformation of the horse.
