Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -

I once read some good advice on breeding - "If a certain stallion produces
offspring you like, search out that stallion, and breed to him. --- If you
cannot get the father, then the next best thing is to breed to the sons."

Call it bragging, if you will . . . I can't deny being very proud of our
stallion, Gjest.

 The fact is that of the six horses named in the Fjord Herald in the
article on the USDF (U. S. Dressage Federation) All-Breed Awards . . .
THREE of them were Gjest offspring -

Of the SEVEN placings listed for Training Level, First Level, and Second
Level . . . . SIX of those placings were Gjest sons and daughters.

These horses were ----

MRF SVEA (Gjest daughter), Training Level Open Div: 1st place

BDF KANADA KING (Gjest son), First Level, Open Div:, 2nd place

BDF IDAR (Gjest son), First Level, Open Div;, 3rd place

BDF KANDA KING (Gjest son), Second Level, Open Div:, 1st place

MRF SVEA (Gjest daughter), Training Level, Adult Amatuer Div:, 1st pl.

BDF IDAR (Gjest daughter), First level, Adult Amateur Div:, 1st pl.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**** NEWS FLASH!!!!  BDF IDAR (Gjest son), owned and ridden by Elaine
Olsen, Los Angeles, CA, has received another Top Five Award from the
California Dressage Society's southern chapter being one of the Top Five
scoring horses competing in open competition at First Level.  This, of
course, is against all other breeds. ---
 Now, wouldn't I love to see him.  You bet!
The "old man", Gjest, is 24 years old now.  He's still a marvelous athlete.
 A thrilling horse to watch in motion, and to drive.  All the List
subscribers who've been to our Beginner Driving Vacation, and had the
priviledge of driving Gjest will attest to that --- right Betsy?  He's an
old man, but he's still got it big-time!
But, who knows how long he'll have "it", which is why this Spring we're
breeding him to all our good mares - Stine, Maryke, Holly, Riena, Saakje,
Saskia, Tialda, and Trijntje. Each one of these mares is gorgeous with
impeccable bloodlines, and wonderful temperaments.
When a stallion gets to be this age, you have to be realistic.  Gjest is
healthy, and has no major problems, so hopefully, he'll go on breeding for
several more years, but one never knows, so we're going all out this year.
Gjest is an International Treasure to the Fjord breed, and we feel we owe
it to the breed to use him as much as possible in his declining years.
So, those of you interested in quality breeding, please keep in mind that
there will be several Gjest offspring available next season. But, if you
want one, the time to speak to us is now.
And for this season, there are the following Gjest offspring available from
Beaver Dam Farm -
BDF QUASAR - (Gjest x Holly) Coming 2 yr. gelding.  Quasar is a full
brother to BDF John Arthur and BDF Magnum, both VERSATILITY WINNERS at
Libby.  Quasar's tall, stong bodied, and very kind.
BDF QUENTIN DURWARD - (Gjest x Maryke) Coming 2 yr. gelding.  Quentin is a
full brother to BDF IDAR, winning dressage horse in Los Angeles.  Also, a
full brother to BDF MISS NAVETA, winning carriage horse in Minnesota and
beyond.  Quentin's tall, leggy, and an excellent mover.  Also, extremely
kind, well-behaved, easy to handle.
BDF REMCO - (Gjest x Stine) Yearling gelding.  Remco is a full brother to
BDF Kanada King, winning dressage horse.  Remco is very very good looking.
Up-headed with lots of style and pizzazz.  He's well-handled and very easy
to handle.
BDF RAN REINSTEIN (Gjest x Rienna) - A grandson of the magnificent
Norwegian stallion, Myrstein.  This is Rienna's first foal, and he's on the
small side, so will be gelded.  He's absolutely adorable.  Easy easy
temperament.  Well mannered.  Incredibly good movement!!!!
****  JARLE (Solar x Uloza) Coming 3 yr. old gelding -  Not a Gjest son,
but a very nice horse.  Not too tall, strongly built, and very pleasant
looking.  Well started driving.  Lots of work has gone into Jarle.  He's
now ready to be your pleasure horse.
****  Each of these young horses is bursting with health - Well handled and
well mannered - Well developed & conditioned -  Trained optimally for his
age level -  And, of course, on schedule for wormings, vaccinations,
farrier.
Best Regards,  Carol Rivoire
PS -  I'm still riding in the snow (every day this week), and loving it
more all the time.  Each night it snows a little making our treks across
the untouched landscape, voyages of discovery.  It was really cold today,
and I could have been persuaded to stay at my desk, but we went, and it was
just grand!!!  The snow was swirling, and the landscape looked like
Nunnavik.  This sensation I get of a vast, untouched wilderness  is
amazing, considering it doesn't look at all like that without snow. It's
friendly, hilly land in the summer, but the snow flattens the contours and
makes the land look much bigger.
 Holly was my mount today, and she was her usual wonderful self.  A joy to
ride.  Plenty of horse under you, but solid, sensible, and kind. -- No
wonder our Beginner Driving guests enjoy her so much. Jaimie rode Toril.
---  I'm getting hooked on riding in the snow, and can't wait for
tomorrow's fix.  -
 Is it the snow, or is it the riding?  Will I love riding in the Spring
mud?  How about black fly season?  Deer flies?
I was talking to Mel Goble (BDF Jason), and he had the same sentiments.
Said how much he enjoyed just walking through the nature seeing Spring
flowers and all the wildlife.  --  Arthur keeps saying he can't believe I
let so much time go by without riding.  Twenty plus horses on the farm at
all times, and I sat at my desk.  However, it's not too late.  I might be
60, but as someone said, "I feel 23."
I think that person suggested we identify ourselves as to age.  That would
be interesting.
Best Regards,  Carol
