If not it is agony, as you know if you have had a plugged tooth abscess. There is immediate relief when the Vet or dentist cuts or drills into the abscess. Then it is usually scraped, depending where it is in the hoof and filled with medication, plugged and as stated a wrap or boot is put on to protect the opening. Some abscesses travel up under the coronet to find a release for the pressure and that can cause growing problems in the hoof. I am not a Vet but I have lots of experience with a horse that an unscrupulous shoer wanted desperately and nearly crippled to get me to sell her to him.
