Carol,
I guess I would have to ask why this information
was not requested by you when you originally
imported the horse?

If you accepted the pedigree as is when you
bought the horse - why now the need to update it?
If it's for the reason of saleability I would
think it's your responsibility to request the
information. If it's for the reason to have
complete pedigrees, I would think that the NFHR
would only be responsible for what it requires of
any horse registered with NFHR. (If you want to
work to change that policy - that's another
matter)

I believe that the NFHR would be going the extra
mile to add the information you might recover
from the Dutch registry to your existing
registration papers.

As for the forms being in 5 generations - why
not, if the information is provided by the owner
or on the data base may as well provide a place
to put it.

Dear fellow fjord lovers, went to the carriage parade in Sharon, WI last
night. A beautiful display, all the carriages lit up and decorated. Jon
promises "for sure" we will be in it next year. Still waiting on our team
harness. All newbies to driving like me, just go to Camptown Harness,
don't try to mess around. I had no idea when I started that Fjords, at
least my Fjords, would take a combination of horse, cob and draft parts
in their harness. This is impossible to buy "off the rack". Avoid wasted
time and money.

Anyway, no fjords in the parade this year, breedwise there was standardbred,
percheron, welsh, shetland, belgian and morgan. A pleasure to see them all.
If the Sharon city webpage puts up photos, I will list the address.

Hope

Hi all-
Just got in from a ride on Jon, my Fjord. We're finally having
winter-like weather...had to wear gloves and fleece breeches! I noticed how
long his tail is - it nearly touches the ground! What should I do? Cut it?
It has gotten much longer since we bought him, and I can't remember if I've
cut it before. I was thinking that since we probably won't be going to any
Fjord activities until summer, it would be okay to cut it and then let it
grow out again. Is there any other decision that might be better? Otherwise,
I'm just going to take a few inches off.

Thanks from PA, where December temperatures have reached the 70s!

I usually cut about 5-6 inches off my fjords' tails this time of
year...should do it now, but it is -35 F out there...one of my mares, Adel,
has a thick long tail that is almost touching the ground now, and the last
few inches are getting ice balls from her pee...gets heavier all the time
so she gets it out of the way less and less. Last year I cut about 6
inches or more off and by early summer it was as long as ever!

Jean in COLD Fairbanks, Alaska, -35F with no relief in sight ;(
"Gloves and fleece Breeches? How about Down parka, insulated overpants and
"bunny boots"! and I'm not even riding! (who can ride in all that clothing,
anyway!)

Wow! I cannot even imagine! BTW, I haven't heard any moose stories from you
recently. Are they staying away from your property these days? Or are they
just becoming so much of an everyday thing for you these days that it seems
"normal" and not worth writing about?

Hi Gail do not remember if I answered you or not about your ideas re the
sinus problem.. I have those antique medicine bits with the funnel but I
also wondered if he might get bit shy. Well, come to think of it he is not
ridden anymore so would not make any difference. When I was dosing him with
bute for two months he got so he would try and hide if he heard me lifting
the halter from its hook.

He is too sensitive re taste. Anything slightly off and he is shy of it.
Never cared for sweets. Something will be bound to work soon. Jean

Gail I have devised a way of coming back through my swinging metal gate but
not going out!!!!! I do not chain it when I leave and so when I come up the
drive (if the puppy has not come to the gate to greet me) I simply hit it
with my bumper at a set speed and it flys open. So far the gate post has
held. Sometimes my timing is off as to how hard I hit it and I do have to
get out and open it "right". I then close it when I go to the field to feed
the horses.

I had one some years ago from Farnum that had rubber tips on the poles and
hanging wrapped wires that shocked the heck out of my collie. Course it
required elec. off the fence lines. You could just drive thru both
directions. It never kept the ducks and chickens at home tho.

          Dear List From Brian Jensen;
There have been many comments lately about the Digest and its
mandate etc. I sincerely thank Steve for his time and patience as a
volunteer to take care of this work. As well I wish to thank all the
volunteers on NFHR Committees; the NFHR Executive, and the working employees
of the NFHR. I believe they give more than they are paid on a continual
basis. The NFHR and CFHA would not be alive and continuing without these
folks who give of themselves in such a generous manner. My picture of the
North American future for the Fjord is one of improved Conformation of the
breed, and continued improvement of the Performance disciplines in the NFHR
Evaluation Program. This means that the Fjord is becoming a better Fjord
overall, and that is good for all of us. It also means that the
owner-handlers are improving as well in their respective disciplines of
Riding-Driving-Draft.
Back to the Digest and a Christmas wish I have.I wish that the list
contributors would stick to the general topics of the Norwegian Fjord horse
and everything about it!!!!! I have read articles about Lamas,Dogs, Cats,
Holidays, and sometimes notes from people who talk about absolutely nothing
related to the Fjord.
I thank Carol for her question about Pedigrees. Now we can
discuss. I disagree that the NFHR should be responsible for pedigree search
beyond their standard. Mike has his hands full doing Real Work and does not
need to be playing Pinkerton on behalf of owners. I found the info from
Dennis most honest and fair. If an owner wants to provide this info for the
Registrar it will be done!!!
I understand that Dennis Johnson will be stepping down as NFHR
Pres. in the new year. My personal thanks to Dennis for his quiet manner and
firm steady hand during his tenure. Many things have been accomplished by
Dennis and his Exec. and the future for all Fjord owners in North America is
better because of it--------Brian Jensen

Hi all -

Just a reminder that the Libby Show will be held on the weekend of Sept 13 -
15, 2002. This is when the town of Libby has scheduled their Nordicfest
celebration. The Show Comm. invites ideas for new, exciting classes - you
may submit them to me privately. Also, we need comments/committments for one
particular class, Unique Hitch. This can be a crowd-pleaser, and is fun for
participants, but has had very few entries in the past few years, so we plan
to leave it out unless we get enough commitments from participants to have a
decent - sized class. Listen up, out there! Let us hear from you.

We had a good Show Comm meeting today in Ritzville, [yes, beautiful downtown
Ritzville] - your show is in good hands. So let's hear what you want!
Otherwise, you'll only get what we want. One thing for sure, the Stick Horse
Class will have an "Adult" division this year; we have to - we can't keep
them out.....

There will be no Evaluation in conjunction with the Show, so no one will
have to plan to take a week's vacation just to be there.

Looking forward to seeing you there - Peg

Dennis is not really stepping down Brian. Dennis has been on the NFHR
Board of Directors for 6 years now. That is the max a person can be on the
BOD without at least a one year break. He isn't quitting on us or anything
like that.

I couldn't agree with you more Brian. Dennis has been one of the best
Presidents the NFHR has had. He is still going to be on some of our
committees too so we will be in touch with him frequently even aft the
first of the year when his term is up.

By the way the new NFHR president for 2002 is Fred Brandt from Stillwater,
MN. The new Vice President is Allan Merrill from Dodgeville,
WI. Catherine Lassessen will be our Secretary for another year as will
Roger Cabic be our Treasurer again.

We also have 2 new members on the BOD for the new year. They are Becky
Vorpagel from Monmouth, OR & Nancy Roemer from Dover, OH.

Mike

Just read an interesting article by Denny Emerson in the Chronicle of the
Horse on-line. No, Denny wasn't writing about Fjords but the subject matter
applies to anyone breeding horses.

It should open up some discussion on this list if anyone is interested.

I have plenty of observations re. Denny's article but will save them unless
this article stirs up some conversation.
