In the 1982 Feb./Mar issue of HARROWSMITH magazine, a Canadian magazine sort of like SUNSET magazine, There was an article entitled: "Gift Horse of the Vikings" by Pamela de Alth., Which was about Norwegian Fjords.

When I read it I decided that if I ever got a horse, this was the kind I wanted. I had always been "Horse crazy" as a kid but put it on the "back burner" with my career in Wildlife management. Then about five years later , watching a PBS program on Circuses of the World, There was shown this troupe of "liberty horses" , all matched in color, small stocky light tan horses with the stand up white manes with black stripes. I looked up the article in the Harrowsmith magazine to realize I was looking at those Norwegian Fjord horses. Showing the article to a friend at work, he told me that someone had just brought some Fjords up to Alaska and they lived just five miles down the road from me! Well, I had to go see them and met George and Elin Weaver of Two Rivers Fjordhest. George was making another trip "outside" to bring up a young stallion and another couple mares. He brought up Stella, a beautiful White dun, who was a bit taller than the others. I immediately fell in love with Stella, and George decided to sell her to me. She was bred to the young stallion, Anvil's Rikolv and there I was, owner of a mare in foal! Of course I needed a Fjord to ride while Stella raised a foal, so on George's next trip south, he brought up an older trained gelding, Bjarne for me. So here was this first time horse owner suddenly with three Fjords, one of which was a foal, my big gelding Bjorken. Well there was no going back! Bjorken became my best buddy, but I learned to ride on Stella and Bjarne, who are now 29 and 31 respectively. And the Fjords became my new "career" and "obsession" at retirement.

These last few e-mails about losing horses is so sad. How about a little
pick me up and hearing how everyone fell in love with the fjord breed?
