I think that for a number of people putting out
$10,000 unexpectedly for colic surgery would be
difficult. However for a fairly reasonable yearly
premium, surgical insurance that will cover usually
$7500 to $10,000 depending on what you get can be
purchased. Surgical only insurance is less expensive
than major medical and can be purchased for horses
older than 16 which is the cut-off age for many
companies for major medical. You do usually have to
have mortality insurance in order to purchase surgical
but for a pleasure horse it is usually about 2-3% of
the horse's declared value. Pfizer also has a program
that provides $5000 toward colic surgery if you give
your horse their brand of daily wormer.
