I tried the epics. One problem that I had was gravel working its way up between the gaiter and the heel of the boot. When dry there is hardly any gap at all between but once wet (going thru a mud puddle) the neoprene streatches and allows any tiny pieces of gravel that is suspended in the water to work into the space between the boot and gaiter at the heel. This gravel then "holds" the gaiter open allowing larger pieces of gravel to work in etc. Ending up with heel rubbing (high up under the gaiter not the boot). The only way I could see to fix this problem is to somehow seal that gap with some epoxy or glue the back of the gaiter to the boot. I ended up going back to the old macs since they didn't trap gravel at the heel. I liked the epics being less bulky and more form fitting than the old macs but that gravel is a problem here where we have lots of mud and mucky puddles no matter where we ride.
Anyone else have a solution to this????
It looks like the bares use the same gaiter system so I'm assuming that it would happen with them as well. I'm finding that the boots are great, protecting my son's thin soled appy wonderfully! The two Fjords are still bare foot but there are some rocky trails that we avoid in the summer that I'd love to utilize. I think boots will be the perfect way to go, just need to solve the gaiter/gravel problem or go with the old macs for everyone. Jane in beautiful but buggy Maine - darn deerflies are horrid!
