My darling hubby has been in charge of winter chores while I've been focusing
on improving my skills & confidence with my "teacher" horse at a boarding
facility. I was not aware that hubby was keeping three round bales out at all
times, and was bringing everyone in for grain every day. When I saw my fjord
I almost fainted. I thought: Weight Watchers Right Now. I put him in a
seperate paddock, and put him on a much more appropriate ration. But cold and
icy footing meant he still just stood around in the shelter waiting for his
next leaf of hay, and his weight remained constant. So I brought him to the
place that I've been keeping my teacher horse, with the heated indoor arena.
He's now getting one leaf of hay twice per day, and I'm working him 20-30
minutes a day. His condition is improving (he is so delightful to work
with!!). But he's got the loosey goosies now... his bum cheeks and tail are
solid green goo. The hay at my house is just grass hay, and he was getting a
third of a coffee can of alfalfa pellets & oats daily; the hay he's on there
is grass & alfalfa. He does not act like he's got a bellyache. He is
drinking appropriate amounts of water. Do any of you feed grass/alfalfa mix
hay? Have any of you switched a fjord from straight grass hay to hay/alfalfa?
If so, how did the transition go? How long would you expect the loosey
goosies to last before deciding there is a problem?
