My sympathies to you and to your poor mare... I can't tell you from the
equine direction, but I have access to a wealth of info & experience on
nursing human babies. You would probably be best off to milk off a little a
couple times a day, and less every few days, stepping down the quantity.
Yes, this will slow the drying up process, but it could keep her in milk
long enough to find an orphan foal for her. It could also prevent a nasty
case of mastitis (all cases of mastitis are nasty), an infection of the milk
glands which could take quite a while to heal, can damage the tissue and
which can be very expensive with the vet... She would probably also
appreciate the company... Gwenn
