The age really does not matter when bitting a youngster (make sure you
use a snaffle).  I have done it with 6 months, yearlings, two year olds
, 4 year olds and yes older that have not been started.   Most except
it very easily ( all breeds).   I usually like to use a handful of
grain the first few times and just let them alone to get used to it.  I
will ground drive them using the halter then after a few days attach to
the bit.  At this point I have them in the round pen, so if they fuss a
bit I can just push them forward and not fight with them about it and
just ask little bit for them to give and then reward.   They are
typically ground driving off the bit very easily in 1 to 2 sessions.
The success of it is starting in a small place such as round pen then
working your way to a bigger arena then field or down the neighborhood.
