I have completed what is a basic primer on the era of the Apache Conflict, which may give some perspective on the overall period. I have lots more reading to do, so I expect the account will change over time.

On our last day in AZ we visited the San Xavier del Bac mission, just south of Tucson. It was first built in 1692, and has operated most of the time since. It was remarkable for being a place where the Indians and the Europeans interacted face to face all these years (still white faces behind the altar). The monks, first Jesuit, then Franciscan, actaully had to learn something about the native cultures.

It was notable that in 1777, the Apaches came by and trashed the mission (it served what was then called the Papago tribe), which was not rebuilt until 1783.
