I figured it was a maven configuration that I had wrong, just didn't know where to look.
Adding the type declaration to my parent pom fixed it. I'd like to understand why it wasn't a problem not to have that when building with 3.2...but I won't look that horse in the mouth. Woot! Now I actually see all the Flex4 incompatibility problems.
