So, I'm not trying to do anything crafty at all. I just downloaded
maven 3.0.3 and then followed the directions on the flexmojos website
for creating an archetype library (which appeared to work), and then
tried to build it using 'mvn clean install'. No other configuration
w.r.t. subversion or github or anything else.

Maven repository. It isn't. That's the source of your issues. The
FlexMojos Maven repository is
https://repository.sonatype.org/content/groups/flexgroup/. Additionally,
you should probably use either FlexMojos 3.8 or 3.9 (if you're using
Maven 2.2.1) or FlexMojos 4.0-beta-7 if you're using Maven 3.0.3. 3.0 is
very old.
The redirects you're seeing are trying to tell you that FlexMojos's
source code, which used to be in Subversion, has moved to GitHub.
