Ok... some combination of pilot error and bad documentation seems to be
at fault here.
I added a settings.xml to my ~/.m2 directory from the example here
https://docs.sonatype.org/display/FLEXMOJOS/Flexmojos+public+maven+repository
but that listing has a bug in it, as it lists the plugin repository id
as 'local', which seems bad and causes maven to complain
I then found another version here
http://flexmojos.sonatype.org/building-sources.html
but that version has HTML that does not render correctly in firefox or
chrome, looking at the HTML source I could see the file contents and got
the correct id for the plugin repository.
Then, just for fun, I changed the archetypeVersion specified in the
example from 3.0.0 to 4.0-beta-7, which seems to be the latest version
of flexmojos.
Wiped out my repository and started again.
SUCCESS!
Looks like some web pages could use some TLC, tho.

whatever repository it has specified is clearly wrong. It should be
the one I provided above. Once you fix your repository, you'll get
further.
