Rick, you might be able to still embed fonts without experiencing such a
dramatic performance problem. Try embedding the fonts but disabling
FlashType (it's enabled by default):

 @font-face {
   src: url("/assets/fonts/ARIAL.TTF");
   fontFamily: myArial;
   flashType: false;
 }
