Absolutely it can be done, but you're probably going to need some kind of lay in between (depending on how you do things). Therefore, you're probably better off treating the remote database as something abstract rather than concretely knowing that it's SQLite - as it's usually more likely it'll be something more like MySQL. Obviously it depends on the environment and how much control of this you have, amongst other design decisions.
