The CPU increase is likely due to the additional code for the display.  Try
comparing the two versions with the display set to Off.  I suspect it will
be closer.

As far as the popping and crackling, I haven't noticed this here, but I
don't usually have MultiRX turned on either.  I'll check this out here.
