I forgot networking was the big feature of the signature series.

Im not a computer engineer or computer scientist, I just hangout with a
bunch of them. I know enough to make myself sound stupid (I am good at
following along with the comp-Eng talk, but have learned its usually best to
keep my mouth shut most of the times. Physics, Eletrical Engineering and
Systems Engineering are my stronger points). Scripting and uControllers are
the bulk of my software experience. (a lot of my programs requiring user
interfaces is either done in LabVIEW or MS Excel or Access using embedded
VB, primarily because I know enough to get 'er done.)

As things exist right now I have been tinkering with some custom operating
software. Having one piece of software is much more elegant and easier to
use than constantly tabbing between windows. I am tired of using CAT
commands over virtual linked serial ports to get the software to do what I
want. If I had an API for PowerSDR, I would be happier. This is what is
needed for the FLEX series of radios, because PowerSDR is where the
processing takes place.

I am excited to be able to control the radio over network. I have been
building station accessories (rotor controlers, coax switches,
transverters/sequencers, etc) that are all controlled over Ethernet. Sending
simple commands over Ethernet is easy to do. To be able to send commands to
the radio in the same way would sure be ideal; everything else is connected
via Ethernet.

I use N1MM for the most part, I like it but it works best with stand alone
radios. All looging software is this way. The challenge is having the
logging software and the radio control software coexist at the same time
without stepping on each other's toes, from a user interface standpoint. What
is really needed is a contest suite that is intimately meshed with the flex
radios, not just compatible. Im hoping for the agility to do a ground up
rewrite of a contest logging software that is built into the radio
interface, if it meshed other logging software would be great so that during
a multi Op where everyone else is using N1MM with their knob-rig, I could be
using "N1MM-Flex, Contesting Super Suite" with my flex under the table.

Its fun to tinker, and its fun to dream.

And I think what George and Neal (and of course myself) are really looking

Protocols. Wire protocols. That is platform independent. Of course, if
someone wants to produce include files that describe the data structures
that is probably OK too. Still, the protocols are the actual interface, not
some API.

There is a need to merge logging apps with radio control application as well
as other station control applications, especially while contesting where
things are fast and loosing focus of the window you need to have active can
be disastrous.

You have the cart ahead of the horse. Make communications happen then build
the applications on top of that.
