I posted this recently to the yahoo group flex list. If I am wrong
maybe someone on the list will correct me:
I think it is wrong to assume that PowerSDR does not generate income.
The effort to transform it into the relatively stable, useful product
with all these neat features that it has today has sold MANY
5000/3000/1500 radios for flex over the last couple years, and will
continue to do so. Buyers are not simply paying for Flex hardware. A
portion of what we pay for each radio goes to pay for PowerSDR.
Even for those who simply downloaded the "free" software to play with
or to use with the $12 softrock receivers, many went on to completely
embrace the Flex system. In my case, learning how well SDR worked
from my $12 softrock experience, using "free" PowerSDR, has meant
around $8600 for Flex (so far).
PowerSDR is no more free than broadcast television, and both PowerSDR
and TV broadcasters will certainly generate future income. You and I
just don't pay for it DIRECTLY. You don't see the dollars flow, but
they flow nonetheless.
As long as Flex sells the current hardware, I am guessing that it
will continue to support PowerSDR.

I appreciate that software development costs money...
So just throwing a question out there. If a subscription model was
applied to PowerSDR after 2.4
or 2.5 is released would that not go some way to funding the
on-going development of the software?
Great software is something that I for one would be more than
willing to pay for, and do with
other software packages I use on a regular basis.
Perhaps branch it off from open source to be a commercial version
that those who wish to pay for a
yearly update subscription - similar to SmartSDR?
