Do you allow Windows to automatically install updates without out you
looking to see what those updates are? If so, you are invitingmucho
trouble. Use the custom option to allow Windows to download the updates
but not install them. The you need to go to Windows updates and
manually install what was downloaded.
I *NEVER* install any driver updates. Period. No exceptions. Get your
drivers from the driver vendor.
I only cautiously install new service or feature updates. (like BING
desktop, etc..)
I usually install required updates and any optional security updates.
Also, Windows update will create a Restore Point before applying the
updates. If you do not know how to revert to a previous state using a
Restore Point, you should. As if your system starts acting wonky after
an update, the Restore Point can be your best friend.
Also while on the topic, if you do allow automatic updates, Microsoft
pushes these out to your PC on the second Tuesday of each month, called
"Patch Tuesday". If any of the patches need a reboot after
installation, it will do a "forced reboot" of your PC. This does a
forced shut down of any open applications. If you have PowerSDR running
at this time, the forced shutdown of PowerSDR is almost guaranteed to
make your database inconsistent at the least and corrupt it at the
worst. The second Wednesday of the month is the day we always have a
spike in support requests and this is the primary cause.

I have been running my 5000 with a 64bit Windows 8 machine for months, PowerSDR
v2.5.3 .... Absolutely rock solid ...
I rebooted this evening after it installed about 8 updates .....
PowerSDR crashed within 3 minutes of receive only ....
I confirmed this several times....
I removed the updates dated 4/5/2013 and re-booted ....
Seems to be back to normal ....
Anybody else ? Or am I just the lucky one?
