I'm curious as to your situation.  I assume you have a 5000 and need a preamp.

Unless you use a really inefficient antenna or have a really lossy feedline, 
keeping the preamp in the shack will not penalize your reception and be way 
easier to trouble shoot should the need arise.  The sky temperature on 6 meters 
is rarely low enough to require less than a 2 to 3 dB system noise figure.  
Even then, one would need a complete absence of man-made noise and a G/T figure 
of merit not easily obtainable in 50 MHz antenna systems to notice any 
difference.

On 2 and 432, the sky is much quieter and mast mounted is desirable.

However, I easily subscribe to the notion that if a little bit is good, too 
much is even better.
