Hi folks!

Dayton was a blast! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the folks we have talked with.

Probably the highlight of my ham radio career and I have been involved in a lot of highlights!

I’d like to thank Tom – AA8YI for being a stalwart contributor. Producing the handouts we all worked on and, getting Teamspeak going on Thursday and Friday. Bringing in and setting up equipment both nights!  He even sold an SDR! (I sold 2 myself!). We kept picking off the parties at the back of the 6 deep crowd Gerald had at his booth almost from open to close the whole weekend. I don’t ask Gerald about sales, however the stack of order forms was pretty big and Sunday was looking great also before I left.

I Also thank John – W5GI, Phil – VK6APH and Terry – W0VB for giving supurb presentations in the suite and also on Sunday during the SDR forum at Hara. We had a group of 50 to 100 folks at the Sunday morning forum, which is kind of astounding.

There were great questions from the crowd after each presentation, except Terry’s.After Terry’s on the air demo’s of the now famous ‘now you don’t hear it now you do’, and KM0T’s recording of 5 and 10 gig communications doing rain scatter, the crowd was speechless. Phil and I were both worried that his presentation on the median noise blanker would glaze over the eyes of appliance folks, fully 10 great questions were asked and much ‘why notting’ going on. At least 3 folks in the crowd are C# programmers and want to program on the SDR. John’s presentation on customizing audion on the SDR was greeted with questions equally interesting, so many in fact that we had to gag so we could get the other speakers in! Now we need John to post the various, mics, setups, settings and other audio variables, so dummies like me can get everything connected right and result in hi-fi audio. I think an article would be appropriate. One regret on Sunday is that Hara does not have high speed Internet Access so we could not pubublish the presentations.

Sorry for the audio and video from the suite! The back lighting could not be managed, and even if off, there was no foreground lighting. We had hoped to have a wireless mike for teamspeak, however, with all the audio experts around none of us could get the Bluetooth device to pass audio! I think Tom would have worked on it till morning, had I not dragged him away so we could pack up the equipment, put it on a truck and store it in Phil’s and my room!

Also Craig – KC2LFI, who although he could not attend pumped out 100 of the demo disks, added to my 100 and Dan’s 25 and husbanded very carefully lasted the whole weekend. I think there were only 25 left when I left, and they were going quick, since I mentioned them at the Sunday morning forum. Hopefully many of them will act like “Tar Baby”.

Finally Gary: W5ZL who most people don’t know set up all the suite arrangements with Crown Plaza, helped Gerald at the booth ALL weekend, and arranged for the Flexi awards.

Gerald’s presentation early Saturday morning had over 100 seats filled on the floor, and 3 deep sitting around the perimeter walls, and people at the door who could not get in! Flex Radio and SDR – 1000 has really come of age, and has the best receiver of any at the show! Ya gotta see Gerald’s demo of the 60 over 9 signal disappearing in about 10 hz off tuned. As I wandered the hamfest looking at all the software and hardware being sold which involves sound cards and cat interfaces, an specialty modes, I couldn’t help to muse that SDR has the potential to eliminate almost all of these in software. Or better yet in the interim, add them in as ‘attached’ apps before they are fully integrated into custom consoles.

I will listen to and publish the Teamspeak audio after Wednesday when AA8YI get’s back in and we can transfer the files from his computer!

I ran into Simon – HB9DRV – HRD Kits, at the airport as I was leaving. He had been hunting me all weekend, and actually he wanted ‘the other Eric’! He is a delightful gentleman ham, and in our chat before I had to board, he mentioned wanting to design his own GUI with Active-X controls doing 3 D displays!!! Go Simon.

I’m still enervated!

C U on Teamspeak.

Eric – AA4SW
