Just to be hyper clear, the idea behind a Knoppix style solution is that you leave your Windows hardfile alone, boot Linux from CD not to install, but to run. This is often called a "Live CD" approach in the literature. You boot Linux from CD and Windows normally when you're done playing with Linux.

CDs (and certainly DVDs) are now large enough for this to be practical. In fact, there's a roughly 50 MB distribution that works this way that's servicable. That's probably more spartan than we want, so I didn't mention it in particular, but its really amazing how much power an ordinary desktop PC, and its hardfile or even just a CD, represents in terms of horsepower and available function.
