Hi Harold, Holy Molars! Another Software defined Dentist ...eh? From one Health Care Professional to another, I can understand your frustration. I have been practicing General Dentistry since 1980, and like you had seen a lot of stuff pushed on us as the Next Big Thing. H-wave? Diagnodent? Ozone caries removal, low bandwidth digital xray wireless sensors? Hoo Har! Our local guru, Ray Bertolotti DDS has spent many years trying to help us debunk the junk. I am one of his loyal Bondodontist followers for years.
As for SDR, IMHO it is the REAL DEAL, and we are extremely lucky to have Flex Radio and friends behind it. I thought everything was working OK in your last post, so what happened? BTW, I also built a brand new machine designed from the ground up for SDR use, and no RFI/EMI to my existing Classic ICOM rigs. I also have an older AMD Athlon XP 1.5 ghz that also runs PowerSDR with no problems with only 256megs of ram, and of course a 30-40% CPU usuage. My new Athlon 64 Dual Core 2 ghz machine is running Version 1.6 with no problems at all. After a successful CW roundtable, or SSB session with the HFpack Group I get the same feeling of satisfaction when a multi-unit fixed bridge literally drops in without occlusal adjustments. I feel like a Gow Gates Pro when I proudly announce that I am using a Flex Radio SDR-1000 to the net. I was told over and over that my audio had never sounded this good. My Athlon 64 machine is only running with 500megs of PC-3200 ram, and more will be installed ASAP. The sound card in both Athlon machines are Delta 44's. I was not brave enough to try out the Presonus Firebox and decided to wait until Dayton 2006 to buy one from the Flex Radio booth. I am also running Windoze XP 2003, and the usual .Net and MDAC everyone else had loaded from Microsoft's site. I use a Gibson Research security patch that gets around the original bloated Service pack I . My machine had started with an empty 7200 RPM SATA II WD drive that was carefully loaded with only the software that I needed. I have no other processes running in the background as a result. Since your new machine is obviously a hair-pulling experience, and you already dealt with dual core issues, have you considered putting a Delta 44 PCI card back in service ? It could very well be the Motherboard you are using. Computer builders at my local Vendor seem to be having a bit of trouble with their AOpen Motherboards. Problems had cropped up that simply will not go away. Over the years I had learned to stick with motherboards that have proven track records. I only bought SuperMicro MB's for my previous homebrewed machines, which had extremely low RFI. Today, based on what I had read on the gaming and geek sites, ASUS MB's are pretty reliable. For me, both homebrewed ASUS Athlon Machines had been quite successful when running PowerSDR and Delta 44's. Ok.. I am no programmer or super-duper computer whiz. I am just a dedicated ham radio enthusiast since 1963 who now tries to avoid early adopter syndrome. After buying several rigs over the years with flaws that would only be fixed in the next model, SDR is indeed the way to go. So use your keen Dental Diagnostic skills and trace back to what worked in the older machines. I have NO problems with crummy interupts with my Delta 44's, so take a look at how your Firewire is interfaced to your Presonus. Is it a on-board port? Do you have a hosed Firewire card that needs to be changed to the one from Fry's that Eric from Flex Radio recommends? If you can do what WE do for a living and still have your sense of humor, I am sure you can find the problem yourself. Its not rocket science!! Locating cracked tooth syndrome with referred pain, or finding that vertical root fracture seems to be more difficult. If you do sinus lifts for implants, you know what I mean! Hey... we are Dentists! We fear nuthin' and look forward to our next Root canal, or Implant case. BTW, you didnt say what was your speciality. 73, Ken Chong, DDS WB6MLC (mighty large cavities) (Keep the faith Harold! The Flexers are a swell bunch of hams IMHO.)
