This is not quite true; there is some support for these fake RAID
implementations in the "dmraid" software. eg see
http://people.redhat.com/~heinzm/sw/dmraid/readme

An inexpensive RAID controller is just the same as a non-RAID
controller, so you'd best use Linux software RAID.
