Don't forget that the Firebox has two integrated preamps as well.

I need to clarify Flex's position.

A mic preamp is not required to operate the SDR1000-there is sufficient
gain included in the software to run just about any low level
microphone. We have not done a good job of documenting the various
procedures to achieve the desired result; this is somethig we are
working on.

On the other hand, a preamp is a worth while addition, not only for the
SDR1K but for other radios as well when low gain microphones are used.

The Behringer UB802 mixer at $39 is a best buy. It has 2 pre-amplified
inputs and numerous outputs and phantom voltage. It is relatively RF
proof.
It also as an effective 3-band EQ.

Phil,

Yes, in my estimation (not agreed with by Flex, both Eric and John have
both thumbs down my take on this), a good low noise mic pre-amp is a
fine addition to the Flex set up. I use an inexpensive Beringher.

In a thread a few weeks ago, I suggested this fix to a fellow Flexer
that was having "echo" efffects with mic gain setting on front GUI of
50+. He was using a Heil Studio One mic. I suggested he get the GUI
setting well below 35 and use a preamp. I never heard back from him, but
maybe it worked.
I certainly can say that this is an issue in my shack, and the pre-amp
along with low settings on the console takes care of these issues.
