Allow me to caveat that idea with the following:

MP3 is a perfectly acceptable audio format for plain audio (post processed,
as we call it on the wave recorder).  What Bob is referring to is preserving
Pre-Processed IF recordings that contain much more data than just the ~3kHz
coming out of the final filter.  These kind of recordings need to be
preserved in a format that is not lossy and therefore MP3 will not do the
job.
