If you need to replace a machine now and want/need Windows then go with XP: it is a well tested and understood environment with all drivers readily available. Personally I would avoid Vista like the plague for the next few years. Let others iron out the bugs and deal with the hassles of driver availability. Just cause its newer, doesn't mean its better.
